The Mixing Process
Why Include Stems?
In the event of you deciding in the future that your final mix needs some adjustment, with just a stereo audio file available you’re stuck. It’s not always practical to go back to the mix engineer to tweak the track, especially if you’ve already agreed to the final mix being the way you wanted it or it was completed several weeks or months before.
With stereo stems of the various elements of your mix separated, you can alter the balance between the drums and guitars for example or push the lead vocal higher in the mix. Some mastering houses master from stems too, so you’ll never be stuck if your project’s requirements change, which, let’s be honest are not always your decision, especially if you’re looking to secure any kind of deal.
Part of our job is to provide you with a great mix that will be able to adapt to whatever comes your way and remain great.
Virtual Console and Tape machine Vibe
We take a great deal of pride in a K-Sound mix. There is a lot of experience here at K-Sound and a lot of training and expertise from both the current, digital-recording age and the old-school, "large-format-console & tape" days. We have created a beautiful sounding, virtual analog console and tape machine setup, all within the Protools environment and thanks to some truly top-class software. Rob has been perfecting his idea of the ultimate mixing platform within one box for a number of years and the result is pretty close to the sound he was hearing in the days when he mixed on an SSL 4000 G series console and a Studer A80 tape machine.
We’re now able to closely recreate an entire mixing console based on classics like: SSL, API, Neve and Trident… or none of the above of course!
Our expertise and tools help a to get a mix sounding "pretty-much there" very quickly with depth, clarity, warmth and space, but it takes time for the fine-tuning and the difference between a good mix and a world-class one is in the details; details which are top-priority here at K Sound.
All mixes are compared and scrutinised in a number of alternative listening environments too, including other studio-reference monitors. We actually book session time in another professional facility, just to use their monitors! All mixes include a master too, which may save you the expense of getting it mastered elsewhere. It just gives you a more flexible choice.
You can check the equipment details to get an idea of what tools we use, but the most important thing to consider is that it’s about your music, not our mix, so every mix will be determined by the requirements of your recorded masterpiece and, of course your music!
